I was asked today what my favorite Disney movie is. Before they could even get the end of the sentence out I had replied Mary Poppins. She inspires me more than any other DIsney character ever. (Watch out for spoilers for Saving Mr. Banks)
I went to work the other night to go see our premiere of Saving Mr. Banks and my oh my was is a great film. I have not been that fully intrigued in a movie in quite some time. Basically the plot of the story is about P.L. Travers and her struggle with giving up the rights to her beloved Mary Poppins. And it shows Walt Disney in a different light that most people don't want to see him in, human. Flawed. Yes they show his amazing qualities, but they show him as his real self. Someone who smokes but will not let employees or the public know so that it wouldn't promote the bad habit. It showed his discernment and pursuit of the dream he had his heart set on. Mary... "Mary Poppins, never just Mary." (No more spoilers)
Saving Mr. Banks made me appreciate Mary Poppins even more than I already did before. Partially because I am completely in love with Julie Andrews. She is in both this movie and my other favorite, The Sound of Music. She even still inspires me and I would not be the same with out her work in my life. When no one else thought anything else of me, I would say to myself, 'Even if no one else thinks so, you are practically perfect in every way.' And then I would sing My Favorite Things until I would feel better.
So many people think I will just grow out of this childlike faith in the unknown but Mary Poppins made me believe it. She showed me that even when you are older you can still go of to imaginative places and have sophisticated fun like no other. And thats why I won't give up on my love of Disney. It is magic.
I've heard people say that if you really look you can see the wires that hold the characters up in the movie, but those who don't look for it never notice the wire. I agree, but also disagree. I have looked for the wires before. But I can't find them. I think if you have the imagination to believe in Mary Poppins she can be as real as you want her to be.
I might sound like a crazy person. Believing that this made up character is real. But who cares, she gives me hope. And the ability to be innovative and creative in my messy, boring life.
